preparing for breastfeeding

Learning about breastfeeding during pregnancy has been shown to improve breastfeeding self-confidence and improve the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the short and long term.  When I work with future parents I aim to instill in them some solid knowledge around how milk is made and how to build up their supply from day one, with the aim to build their confidence and provide them with knowledge and skills to get them through the early days and weeks.

I hold antenatal breastfeeding preparation sessions for first-time mums and their partners and breastfeeding refresher sessions for mums who have already breastfed before.  If you prefer a group class, I run a skills-based Confident Breastfeeding‍ ‍preparation workshop for parents-to-be every month at the Brussels Childbirth Trust in Ixelles.‍ ‍

The breastfeeding preparation workshop is designed as an add-on to BCT’s antenatal classes (or classes that you have attended elsewhere that don’t focus specifically on breastfeeding), providing a deeper dive into breastfeeding and postpartum planning. We cover many topics including colostrum harvesting, hand expression, breast massage, troubleshooting problems, pumping, how to manage breastfeeding and working and much more. I recommend attending the workshop close to your estimated due date so the tips and skills that you learn are fresh in your mind when your baby arrives.

“'Jane clearly knows her subject, and her passion for breastfeeding really shines through. The course was filled with interesting and useful information, combined with great interaction and open discussions. Jane made me feel more confident, and it was incredibly helpful to learn about the tools and support options available, as well as to receive practical, reassuring advice. Overall, a very valuable and engaging course that I would recommend to anyone who is curious about breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed their child.”

“I really enjoyed the breastfeeding class and found it incredibly informative and reassuring. Jane was wonderful—warm, knowledgeable, and so supportive throughout the session. She created a comfortable environment where every question felt welcome and answered with care. I left feeling much more confident and prepared, and I’m very grateful for the guidance and encouragement she provided. Thank you for such a positive and valuable experience!
