antenatal preparation

I cannot stress enough the importance of antenatal preparation as it will make a significant difference to your overall birth experience.  Though each birth experience is of course unique, it helps to understand what you can expect at different stages during labour and how you can help the process along. By learning about what to expect you can feel more in control, empowered, and confident in your body’s ability to handle labour and delivery and it can help you feel more relaxed during the experience.

Many of my clients are already doing antenatal preparation in group classes and if this is the case, my prenatal support will be tailored to consolidate your learning, fill in any gaps and ensure that you and your birth partner have all the knowledge, tools and practice to help you to approach your birth with a calm confidence.

Typically we would have one or two antenatal sessions at your home closer to your due date and we’ll visit your care provider together. We will run through comfort measures (techniques that you - and your birthing partner if you have one - can use to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation during labour). I will share many useful resources with you and we will talk through your birth preferences and how to make informed decisions should anything unexpected arise. I will share lots of tips around postpartum planning, matrescence and the fourth trimester. We will also do some breathing practice together and I will share guided meditation audios with you.

‘Jane was everything I was looking for in a doula, and I really can’t recommend her enough. I’m sure my birth wouldn’t have been the same positive and empowering experience without her. During my pregnancy, Jane helped me create my birth plan, making me aware of options I didn’t even know were available and helping us prepare for the birth. She also joined us at a scheduled hospital appointment to discuss the birth plan with my doctor. In the lead-up to the birth, I was nervous and in touch with Jane almost daily through messages and calls. She always provided thoughtful support and guidance. During labour, she was a calm and supportive presence, intuitively knowing what we needed and when. Jane also shared photos and notes from our son’s birth that I will treasure forever. She provided wonderful support in establishing breastfeeding amidst lots of conflicting advice. If I have another pregnancy, I will definitely want Jane by my side again’.
